Experiencing Bali

On this retreat, there’s lots of space for taking it all in . . .

The exuberance and stillness of Nyepi are a remarkable initiation for what comes next: leisurely days of curated explorations & plenty of time for unplanned surprises—or what we love to call “Bali magic.”

A Little Glimpse of Some of the Explorations that Await You

  • Golden hour walks through the rice-fields and winding roads —enjoying the sights, sounds, and beauty of village life.

  • Learning to make Canang Sari, the daily traditional Balinese Hindu offering that you will see everywhere on the island.

  • Purification at the two Sacred Water Temples in the village where we are staying.

  • Being fitted for custom Balinese clothing by our friend, Rey. She will make a tailored kebaya (the traditional lace blouse) for all the women & pair it with a colorful sarong. For the men, she’ll procure sarong and udang (the traditional headpiece

  • Sunrise and breakfast from a gorgeous mountaintop coffeeshop with breathtaking views of two sacred volcanoes, Batur and Agung. This morning will also include an opportunity to visit a local traditional market.

  • Embodied practices throughout our time together including yoga, breathwork, mantra, and mudra.

What’s Your Pleasure? We keep space in the itinerary for activities of your own choosing, such as these:

  • Ride in a tube down a river—surrounded by lush jungle. It’s beautiful and so much fun, especially on a hot day! The rapids are gentle but exciting. You’ll also get lots of photos & video from your adventure.

  • Take a Balinese cooking class. Learn about the main ingredients and techniques of island flavors to take back home with you. You will prepare and eat the delicious meal that you and your friends make

  • Shop in Tagallaleng or Ubud — where you can also visit the famous Monkey Forest.

  • Visit a woodcarving shop & maybe try your own hand at this craft.

  • Spend time with Gamelan players & learn about this traditional music.

  • Learn more about Bali’s textile arts, and give a try at making your own Batik patterns.

There’s also a whole array of “Choose Your Own Adventures”

On this retreat — tasting the flavors of Bali is a main event all its own!

We once met a traveler who had returned to Bali just to enjoy another taste of the island’s unique and abundant fruit. After just one day in Bali , we’re confident you’ll understand why! Indeed, delicious fruit will be a star feature of each day —starting with breakfast, of course. Most days, you’ll enjoy this first meal from the comfort your private villa—where you’ll sip Bali coffee or tea and drink your pick of fresh juice —papaya, watermelon, pineapple, and more! Eggs your way, banana pancakes, and savory Balinese porridge are also on the menu — and a great way to start the day!

For lunches and dinners, you’ll have many opportunities to eat like a local! ‍ ‍The kitchen at our villa serves up classic Indonesian dishes like coconut curry, nasi goreng, or satay with peanut sauce and your choice of spicy sambals. We’ll also take you out to eat at some of our favorite local warungs (restaurants).

And, should you find yourself craving more familiar fare, American and European style food is readily available. Pizza and pasta are almost always on the menu!

All this and Balinese Language Lessons Too!

Before your trip we will have two opportunities to meet online with a Balinese language teacher and learn few phrases & words. He’ll also share fun & meaningful things to know about about Balinese culture.
